Frequently Asked Questions

Is this a free alternative to Loom?

Yes. Loom charges $15/month for unlimited recordings. ForgeDaddy's screen recorder is 100% free with no limits — no watermarks, no time limits, no signup. Your recordings are never uploaded to any server.

Can I record my screen and webcam at the same time?

Yes. Select "Screen + Camera" mode. Your webcam is composited directly into the recording as a draggable, resizable overlay — not just a visual preview. Choose circle or rectangle shape, drag it anywhere on screen, and resize it to your liking. The camera position and size you set is exactly what appears in the downloaded file.

Can I move and resize the webcam overlay?

Yes. In Screen + Camera mode, drag the webcam overlay anywhere within the recording area and resize it by dragging the corner handle. Circle mode locks the aspect ratio to keep a perfect circle. Rectangle mode allows free width and height adjustment. The overlay position is composited into the actual recording.

Can I record mic and system audio at the same time?

Yes. Check both "Record Audio (Mic)" and "System Audio" before recording. ForgeDaddy uses AudioContext mixing to combine both sources into a single audio track — most browser-based recorders can only capture one or the other. On Chrome for Windows, remember to check "Share system audio" in the screen picker dialog.

What format is the recording?

Recordings are saved as WebM (VP9/Opus or VP8/Opus codec), which plays in all modern browsers. Chrome and Edge produce the highest quality recordings. You can convert WebM to MP4 using ForgeDaddy's Video Compressor.

Can I record system audio?

System audio recording depends on your browser and OS. Chrome on Windows/ChromeOS supports it — when the screen picker opens, check "Share system audio" at the bottom of the dialog. macOS requires additional setup. Mic audio always works regardless of OS.

Is there a time limit?

No. Record as long as you want. The only limit is your device's available memory and storage. A 10-minute screen recording typically uses 50-200 MB.

Where is my recording stored?

Nowhere — until you click Download. The recording exists only in your browser's memory. Once you download it, it's saved to your device. If you close the tab without downloading, the recording is lost.

Will recording freeze if a video is playing on screen?

No. ForgeDaddy uses OffscreenCanvas with a Web Worker to composite the screen and camera off the main thread. This prevents the UI and recording from freezing even when capturing high-motion content like videos or games.

How to Record Your Screen

  1. Choose what to record — Screen Only, Camera Only, or Screen + Camera. Toggle mic and system audio on or off.
  2. Click Start Recording — a 3-2-1 countdown begins. Your browser will ask which screen or window to share.
  3. Record your content — in Screen + Camera mode, drag and resize the webcam overlay to position it exactly where you want. Choose circle or rectangle shape.
  4. Stop and download — click Stop Recording, review the duration and file size, then download your video as WebM.
